Should you replace your boiler with a more efficient one?

According to the Energy Saving Trust, your boiler accounts for about 55% of what you spend in a year on energy bills, so having an efficient boiler makes a big difference.

Replacing an old gas boiler with an A-rated efficiency boiler such as Vaillant, which is the brand we always use, will significantly cut your home’s carbon dioxide emissions and could save you over £300 a year.

Below is a chart from the energy saving trust, which gives an idea of how much you could save, depending on your house and old boiler rating:

Why are new boilers more efficient?

The main advantage of modern boilers is that they are all condensing boilers. While older, well-maintained boilers should burn their energy efficiently, they will inevitably lose some heat in the hot gases that escape up the flue. A condensing boiler has a bigger heat exchanger, which means it recovers more heat, sends cooler gases up the flue and is therefore more efficient.
